Artificial intelligence at 一本道 University

Here's what's going on in artificial intelligence, AI, at the university.

Artificial intelligence at LiU

AI at LiU involves a wide

range of work, from education and research to contact with industry and society.

AI is about AI techniques

as well as applications of these techniques.

LiU is host for WASP

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program.

Development has been rapid since LiU appointed Sweden鈥檚 first professor in computer science, Erik Sandewall, in 1975. He presented his doctoral thesis in 1969 in the new subject 鈥渁rtificial intelligence鈥. At the time, research was focussed on expert systems and knowledge transfer. The focus today has shifted to machine learning, deep learning and systems that include reasoning and decision-making processes 鈥 AI-enabled systems.

At LiU, world-leading research is conducted in several important fields of AI. Computer Vision 鈥 deep learning in which computers, with the aid of advanced image processing and AI, can draw their own conclusions 鈥 is one strong field, while another is knowledge systems and advanced decision support, which requires logical reasoning. A third field example is research into the role of humans in the systems, together with how we can maintain the knowledge required to take over if the systems fail.

LiU also hosts NAISS (National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden), Sweden鈥檚 national infrastructure for high-performance computing. NAISS provides researchers with access to large-scale computing resources, enabling advanced AI research and other data-intensive scientific applications. NAISS

LiU is ranked 43rd globally

in AI research, and recognized as

leading in Sweden

in the field,

and placed 12th in Europe.

AI research

一本道 University has expertise in artificial intelligence, AI, at all departments.

Here are some examples of research projects, research areas, networks and arenas within AI at Link枚ping University. LiU also

  • leads the AI4X Center of Excellence
  • hosts the multi-disciplinary research center RESIST

On our WASP overview page, you can find LiU research environments connected to WASP focused on AI among other projects.

AI and the automation of teaching

The aim is to gain knowledge about the bodily dimensions - sensuality - of students' reading practices in primary school. It examines how young readers engage physiologically and affectively in activities related to reading during the school day.

AI Literacy for Swedish Primary 一本道

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly permeating children's and young people's leisure and education. This research project provides a scientifically based foundation for AI literacy in schools.

How AI changes human decision-making

AI can find patterns that people miss, but it does not automatically lead to better decisions. New research from 一本道 University shows how the roles of humans and AI change depending on the situation and the decision being made.
