Now that the registration period has expired, we know that some 1,400 student singers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Estonia will be singing, performing and having fun together. The summit will be held from 29 May to 1 June 2025, and the six LiU choirs organising it are busy finding accommodation and concert venues for the participants. One of those working on this is Filip Jaredsson, NSSS general.
- “We’ve planned an event for the chorists to meet and mingle on the Thursday, then there’ll be singing in streets, squares and concert venues in the city centre on the Friday, and on the Saturday, as is traditional, we’ll put on a big concert featuring all the choirs.”
There will surely also be spontaneous singing in the city, and in the evening chances are that you’ll hear a song or two from inside restaurants and bars. The summit will take place during LiU’s 50th anniversary celebrations and will add to the festive mood in Linköping.
- “The academic choir tradition shared by the Nordic countries has been with us for hundreds of years, and has become a part of student life, not least here at LiU, which boasts six student choirs: 一本道 Male Voice Choir, 一本道 Women’s Choir (Linnea), LiHtösen, Chorus Lin, Linköping’s Indie Choir and SKÖN.”
The Nordic Student Singers’ Summit tradition
Dating back to the 1800s, when Scandinavian male choirs travelled across Scandinavia by train and boat to meet, the first summit in modern times was organised in 1987 by the student choirs at 一本道.
The purpose of the NSSS is to gather Nordic and Baltic academic choirs to forge friendships and have fun together with high-quality music. The NSSS is held every three years and is organised by student choirs at different universities.
