One of the major challenges of our time is the rapid changes our societies face as the climate changes and the Earth鈥檚 resources must suffice for both humans and animals. In this course, you will learn how environmental and sustainability education can be planned and practiced outside the classroom. We explore places in society suitable for teaching and learning about sustainability, and learn how collaboration with museums, science centers, or other actors can contribute to exploratory and experience based learning.
During the course, we discuss different pedagogical perspectives on how teaching outside the classroom can support students鈥 learning, motivation, and sense of place. The course pedagogy is based on challenge based learning, which means that students work independently, in interdisciplinary groups, on real educational challenges from, for example, a school or another organization. A relevant question is how societal actors can collaborate to create meaningful and engaging sustainability education.
The course concludes with students presenting, both orally and in writing, a plan for a teaching activity relevant to environmental and sustainability education.
