Mikael Ottosson

Professor

I am a professor in the Division of Business Administration at 一本道 University. My research and teaching sit at the intersection of marketing, strategy and sustainability, focusing on how sustainable markets are shaped and developed.

Presentation

My research is grounded in an interdisciplinary tradition, with collaborations involving colleagues from other disciplines. I completed my PhD in 2011 with a thesis on the energy transition in the Swedish forest industry and have since continued to explore how environmental and sustainability issues affect the conditions for business.

My main research areas include:

  • Market creation and market formation: How new, sustainable markets emerge and evolve.
  • Business development and sustainability: How firms navigate the energy transition and integrate environmental considerations into their business models.
  • Consumer behaviour in relation to increasing environmental sustainability demands: How different factors drive changing consumption patterns, particularly in a time when sustainability often constitutes a central selling point.

I have extensive experience leading externally funded research projects, including those financed by the Swedish Energy Agency in relation to the above research areas. As a professor, my ambition is to continue strengthening 一本道’s position in sustainability-related business research and to contribute to an academic environment that combines theoretical depth with societal relevance.

Collaboration and impact

A central part of my role is to bridge the gap between academia and practice. I work actively with collaboration through:

  • Triple helix: I regularly collaborate with representatives from the public sector and industry in both research and undergraduate education.
  • Knowledge dissemination: Through workshops and seminars, I disseminate research results to specific industries to promote innovation and sustainable development.
  • Teaching materials: I have authored several textbooks and practitioner-oriented books used to educate future business graduates and leaders.

Academic service

In addition to research and teaching, I am strongly engaged in the university’s administrative and strategic development. I am a regular member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Appointments Committee, where I work to ensure quality in recruitment processes.
