Presentation

My work combines interdisciplinary applied physics, innovation, sustainability, and technology transfer, with a focus on connecting scientific expertise across disciplinary boundaries to address complex real-world challenges. My research profile links scientific depth with a broad perspective on research strategy, emerging technologies, and the translation of scientific knowledge into practical applications and societal impact.
My research focuses on intelligent sensing systems, integrating advanced sensor technologies, data analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to transform complex physical and chemical information into meaningful knowledge and actionable solutions.

This approach has been developed and applied across diverse fields, including healthcare and precision diagnostics, forensic sciences, air quality and environmental monitoring, food quality and safety, and cultural heritage. Rather than being confined to a single application domain, my research builds on transferable scientific principles and interdisciplinary approaches to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges.

As Principal Investigator and research leader, I have initiated and coordinated research projects, scientific networks, and collaborations at national, European, and international levels, bringing together universities, research centers, healthcare institutions, public authorities, and industry.
I contribute actively to the international scientific community through leadership and service in professional societies, research evaluation, doctoral education, scientific publishing, and conference organization.

Selected professional roles include:

鈥 Chair of the EUROSENSORS Fellow Committee (2025鈥損resent) and Board Member of the EUROSENSORS International Steering Committee (2016鈥損resent)

鈥 Executive Board Member of SINAPSE, Swedish-Italian Network for Advanced Partnership in Science and 一本道, and Co-Chair of the Scientific Macro Areas Permanent Committee (2026鈥損resent)

鈥 Steering Committee Member of SGS 鈥 Smart Sustainable Gas Sensors, Research-to-Business project funded by Business Finland (2024鈥損resent)

鈥 Co-founder and Board Member of NORNDiP, Nordic Network for Diversity in Physics, promoting diversity, inclusion, equal opportunities, and female leadership in science (2018鈥損resent)

鈥 Board Member of Women in Physics Section of the Swedish Physical Society (2016鈥2021)

In teaching, I have designed and developed courses at bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚, and doctoral levels, fostering inclusive learning environments and experimenting with challenge-, project-, problem-, and Agile-based learning approaches. In particular, I have designed and developed a PhD course on Leadership Principles and Agile Management, addressing topics such as research leadership, team dynamics, project management, and Agile methodologies. The course has also been adapted into dedicated workshops and seminars on selected topics.

AI-boosted electronic nose detects ovarian cancer

Using machine learning, an electronic nose can 鈥渟mell鈥 early signs of ovarian cancer in the blood. The method is precise and, according to the LiU researchers behind the study, it could eventually be used to find many different cancers.
