My research focuses on how digitalization affects people’s opportunities to participate in society and use digital services. I study how these opportunities are shaped by the interplay between people’s own resources and circumstances and the way public institutions and digital services are designed. My research has particularly focused on migrants and residents of socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, but also on other groups in society, in Sweden and the Nordic countries as well as in other international contexts.

I lead and participate in various projects, often in collaboration with municipalities, public authorities, civil society organizations, and companies. An important part of my research is to produce knowledge that not only contributes to academic research but also has practical value for people, organizations, and society at large.

In my research, I combine qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews, focus groups, observations, literature reviews, and surveys. I am an affiliated researcher at the Center for Migration and Integration Research at the Stockholm School of Economics.

I teach political science and social science, including courses on digital government, the Swedish political system, and political theory, and I supervise student theses.

Ongoing projects and work

• Nordic project on digital integration: How municipalities, civil society organizations, and companies can collaborate to promote digital integration among migrants in the Nordic countries. Commissioned by the Nordic Network for Lifelong Learning (NLL).
• Research project on energy poverty in a digital age: How energy poverty, housing vulnerability, and digital exclusion intersect and affect different groups in society. Funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
• Research environment on resilient institutions in a digital era (RIDE): How digitalization is transforming welfare institutions, with a focus on areas including inclusion, diversity, and public administration. The research environment is funded by the Swedish Research Council.

• Research project on digital inclusion (DINAPP): Opportunities and challenges of digital participation among residents of socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Funded by the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (Formas).
• Review for the Swedish Social Insurance Agency: Digital encounters between people and the public sector, with a focus on support for using digital public services. Commissioned by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
• Sustainable eGovernment – Resilience, Innovation and Democracy (SeGRID): Capacity-building program on democratic leadership and public administration in a digitalized society for public servants and civil society representatives from the Western Balkans, the Baltic states, and the EU’s Eastern Partnership countries. Funded by the Swedish Institute.
• How smart are smart cities, homes, and people?: Research review on smart cities and socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Funded by the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (Formas).
• Berlin Process 2024: Participation in Berlin Process forums in Skopje and Berlin focusing on the Western Balkans’ EU integration. Commissioned by the Aspen Institute Germany and Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft.
