Artistic and curatorial decasteization: Anti-caste processes in the global art world
Anna Laine, PhD, KSFM/Tema Q
I will present my ongoing project that investigates emergent anti-caste processes听within contemporary art and curating.听It focuses on how young transnational artists and curators i) research, materialise and perform experiences of casteism and visions of its annihilation, and ii) navigate between opportunities and risks in relation to the caste system and its intersections with power hierarchies of the global art world and regional art scenes in Europe and India.
Caste is pursued as a globally networked social structure and a base for discrimination. The project builds on evidence against elite claims of a casteless contemporary public where caste is a private matter for Hindus in India, and on the recognition of epistemologies of the continuously caste-oppressed and their desire for emancipation and a casteless humanity.
The conceptualisation of the听theoretical and methodological processes of dismantling caste and casteism in听civil society, state and academia as听decasteization will be expanded into the social dynamics of anti-caste processes in the global art world.
